Rare Deactivated US Army Model 1879 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle

Rare Deactivated US Army Model 1879 Springfield Trapdoor Rifle
16 August '16
This is a model 1879 US Army Springfield Trapdoor 45/70 rifle produced until 1885, used during the Indian Wars and Spanish American War. It comes with original certificate. Examples of 45/70 trapdoor rifles deactivated are not common in the UK. This rifle retains the “1884” cartouche and proofing "P" these markings are often missing from original trapdoor rifles and carbines. The rifle itself is very nice, it has a good overall patina with some finish on parts, there is no pitting except on the cleaning rod. The breech block is stamped “U.S. Model 1873” with all the other correct inspectors markings, there is a “32” stamped on the breech and butt stock. The stock has at some stage had a professional repair done in the wrist area, it is not too noticeable, in fact the inspectors cartouche passes across the repair but is not affected. Due to the repair to the stock I am offering the rifle at about half of what these normally sell for. £375 ono.
